World Alzheimer's Day: A Global Effort to Raise Awareness and Fight Stigma

Each year, September 21st marks World Alzheimer's Day, a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia. This day serves as a vital platform to educate, advocate, and challenge the stigma surrounding these conditions. With millions of people affected by Alzheimer’s, it’s more important than ever to come together to support those living with the disease and their caregivers.

At Mansfield Town Community Trust, we are proud to be part of this ongoing effort through our Active Minds initiative, which aligns perfectly with the goals of World Alzheimer’s Day. By providing a safe, inclusive space for those facing mental health challenges, dementia, or social isolation, we aim to enhance the physical and emotional well-being of our local community.

What is Active Minds?

Every Friday, we host Active Minds sessions at the One Call Stadium. These free sessions are divided into two strands, focusing on mental health, dementia care, and social well-being. The program harnesses the power of sport to create a welcoming environment where participants can connect, stay active, and improve their overall health.

Whether you're living with Alzheimer's, another form of dementia, or facing social isolation, our Active Minds sessions provide a sense of community. We understand the emotional toll that these conditions can take, not only on individuals but also on their families and caregivers. By encouraging social interaction and physical activity, we hope to make a positive impact on the lives of our participants.

Active Minds: Coming Together for a Cause

On Friday, 20th September, our Active Minds group had the wonderful opportunity to attend a Macmillan Cancer Support Coffee Morning. Held at One Call Stadium, this event brought together club staff, players, the academy team, and participants from care homes such as Oaklands and Corner House, and Day services such as Mansfield day service and Ashfield Day service. It was a day of warmth, connection, and community as we united for a great cause, enjoying a cup of coffee while raising funds for cancer support. The event was a powerful reminder of the impact that coming together can have, both for those living with health challenges and for the wider community.

How You Can Get Involved

If you or someone you know could benefit from joining our Active Minds sessions, we encourage you to come along. Held every Friday at One Call Stadium, the sessions are free and open to anyone living with dementia, facing mental health issues, or experiencing social isolation. With a focus on well-being through sport and social engagement, you’ll find a caring community ready to support you.

On World Alzheimer’s Day, let’s all make a commitment to challenge the stigma, raise awareness, and continue supporting those living with dementia in any way we can. At Mansfield Town Community Trust, we’re proud to be part of this journey and hope to see more people benefiting from our Active Minds sessions.
